Welcome on my personal home page. Look here to find out about our current research projects.

Interested in working with us? We are currently looking for  a Ph.D. student on the topic of biogeochemistry in surface systems. Download a full description here -

Acid Mine Drainage

Acid mine drainage, sometimes referred to as AMD, results when the mineral pyrite (FeS2) is exposed to air and water, resulting in the formation of sulfuric acid and iron hydroxide. For chemists, the equation for AMD formation is:

FeS2 + 3.75 O2 + 3.5 H2O Û Fe(OH)3 + 2 H2SO4

The products of AMD formation, acidity and iron, can devastate water resources by lowering the pH and coating stream bottoms with iron hydroxide, forming the familiar orange colored "yellow boy" common in areas with abandoned mine drainage.

Biomineralization-Microbial Mats Occurrence

The composition of biogenic carbonates is clearly influenced by geochemical factors, the correct interpretation of these geochemical archives requires a precise understanding of the processes controlling the incorporation of elements, stable isotopes and biomarkers. Modern microbial ecosystems are also a key to understanding our biosphere’s early evolution and its contributions to the atmosphere and rock record.
